The hardest business decision I ever made had nothing to do with money2026-08-27 · LinkedIn · articlelikes —comments —unplanned

The hardest business decision I ever made had nothing to do with money. It was about a person. Someone who had been with us for years. Loyal, hardworking, genuinely good. The kind of person you want in your corner. But as the business grew, the role outgrew them. Everyone could see it. The team felt it. And I kept telling myself it would somehow sort itself out. It did not. For months, I chose comfort over the hard conversation. I told myself I was being kind. Really, I was being unfair. Unfair to the team who had to work around the gap. Unfair to the business that was quietly paying the price. And unfair to that person, who deserved honesty far more than they deserved my avoidance. When I finally sat down with them, the conversation was as difficult as I feared. But something happened that I did not expect. There was relief on both sides. They had known too. They had felt stuck in a role that no longer fit, and my silence had trapped them in it. We found them a path that suited their strengths, with dignity. And I learned a lesson that has stayed with me ever since. Kindness is not avoiding hard conversations. Kindness is having them early, with respect. As founders, we often confuse loyalty with keeping everything the same. But real loyalty sometimes means telling people the truth they need to hear, even when it is uncomfortable for us to say it. The decisions that shape a business are rarely about spreadsheets. They are about people, and about whether we dare to be honest when it matters most. If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, it would be this. Do not wait. The hard conversation you are avoiding is usually the kind one. At Ten2Hundred, we help founders navigate exactly these moments, the human side of growing a business.
